What makes someone a true thought leader?
Dr. Amna Shabbir sits down with Allison Potts, Senior Director of Content at Community.co (the team behind renowned communities such as Forbes Councils), to talk about authenticity, expertise, AI, creativity, and perfectionism.
Allison shares what makes thought leadership stand out, why expertise requires more than sounding confident, and how AI can support content without replacing the human voice. She also reflects on her journey from electrical engineering to publishing, leadership, and writing seven fiction books.
Together, they explore why you don’t need a huge platform, or perfect ideas, to start sharing something meaningful.
Key Takeaways
- Thought leadership should inspire people to think or act differently.
- Expertise can come from credentials, experience, or both—but honesty matters.
- Authentic stories and personality make content more memorable.
- Perfectionism can hold people back from sharing valuable ideas.
- AI is a useful tool, but it should not replace your voice or perspective.
- You don’t need a big audience to start building thought leadership.
- Strong leadership means helping people shine without making them copies of you.
- Success can mean feeling confident and comfortable with the choices you’ve made.
About Allison Potts
Allison Potts serves as the Senior Director of Content at Community.co, where her team of editors publishes hundreds of executive thought leadership articles every week. It's a role that requires a balance between publishing, strategy, and people management. After more than twenty years working across content, sales, and marketing, it's also one she's well suited for.
What makes her background a little unexpected is where it started: a degree in Electrical Engineering from NC State. While self-described as being a geek and a reformed engineer, that foundation never really went away. It shows up in how she thinks about AI, technology trends, and the mechanics of why content either works or doesn't, with a perspective that tends to be more grounded than the conversation usually gets.
Outside of her work helping executives find and sharpen their professional voice, Allison writes fiction under the name Allie Potts. She's produced seven books, contributed to multiple short story anthologies, and has appeared on a handful of literary podcast appearances to promote her science fiction, mystery, and contemporary fiction. While on the surface this may come across as a diverse range of interests, throughout her professional and personal experience is a genuine curiosity about what makes people want to engage with ideas in the first place. Sometimes she’s funny. Occasionally, it is even intentional.
