A popular self-help definition of integrity says it's simply keeping your word, with nothing to do with good versus bad. So Chris Shelton asked the follow-up: by that definition, can a serial killer be a person of integrity? After nearly 30 years teaching this model, Anne Peterson had to answer yes.
This is Part 1 of a series where Anne and Chris take apart core ideas taught across Landmark Worldwide, Scientology and the wider self-help world. They start with integrity, reading through Michael C. Jensen's 2009 interview, "Integrity: Without It Nothing Works," line by line. Anne spent almost three decades in Landmark, including work with Werner Erhard and Mike Jensen on the Being a Leader course. Chris spent decades in Scientology and now studies coercive control.
What they find is a model that works hard to separate integrity from morality, inside a culture where "a person of integrity" and "a good person" are treated as the same thing. Chris names it as loaded language, one of Robert Lifton's markers of thought reform. Anne talks openly about watching her own long-held beliefs come apart in real time, and about the people who have told her this model was used to hurt them.
This episode is for anyone who learned a word one way inside a program and found it means something different out in the world, and for any coach or facilitator who teaches ideas like this one.
