We discuss how augmented reality and the Microsoft HoloLens 2 were used to project a mirrored craniofacial template directly onto the patient during surgery—helping guide exposure, identify critical landmarks, and assess bony reduction without an external optical tracking system. Dr. Chou also shares the technology’s current limitations, including perspective shift and reduced tracking accuracy from different positions around the operating table, and where AR-assisted craniofacial surgery may be headed next.
