Breaking the Age Barrier: Strategic Approaches to Combating Ageism in Modern Organizations

Dela

Abstract: Workplace ageism remains one of the most pervasive yet under-addressed forms of discrimination in contemporary organizations, affecting both older and younger workers across industries and geographies. Drawing on a comprehensive review by Anand et al. (2024), this article synthesizes evidence from four decades of research to examine the organizational consequences of age-based discrimination and presents evidence-based interventions that human resource professionals and organizational leaders can implement. Recent data indicate that approximately two-thirds of workers aged 50 and above report experiencing or witnessing age discrimination, with subtle forms of bias—including assumptions about technological competence and resistance to change—affecting 60% of this demographic (AARP, 2026). This article proposes a multilevel framework encompassing organizational culture transformation, HR policy reform, and intergenerational collaboration strategies. By integrating theoretical perspectives from social identity theory, role congruity theory, and diversity climate research with emerging practitioner evidence, we argue that combating ageism requires simultaneous attention to individual attitudes, team dynamics, organizational systems, and societal norms. The article concludes with actionable recommendations for creating age-inclusive workplaces that leverage the complementary strengths of multigenerational workforces while addressing the unique challenges faced by both older and younger employees.
