In November 2014, a Chilean Navy helicopter recorded an unidentified object off the country's central coast using a military infrared camera. The crew tracked the object for several minutes but could not establish radio contact, and nearby radar reportedly did not confirm a corresponding aircraft.
The footage became especially mysterious because the object appeared to release large dark plumes into the atmosphere. Chile's official anomalous-aerial-phenomena investigators studied the case for nearly two years but initially could not identify the target, and the government later allowed the footage to become public.
Independent researchers proposed a more conventional explanation: a distant commercial airliner viewed from an unusual angle, with ordinary contrails appearing strange in infrared. If the object was farther away than the crew believed, its apparent absence from nearby radar and its unusual shape could also be explained.
The Chilean Navy case remains important because it shows the difference between authentic military footage and proof of extraordinary technology. Whatever the final explanation, it became a notable example of official transparency and serious investigation of an unexplained aerial event.
