Music is everywhere in our lives. We stream it on our phones, feel it in a crowd at a live show, and keep it on in the background to get through a pile of work. It is also where a surprising number of ideas begin, whether that’s a creative team hunting for the right needle drop or a media planner who hears a song and suddenly knows how a pitch should feel.
Adam Shlachter is the right person to talk about it, because his career has moved in step with how music itself changed. Now a client President at WPP, he started in PR working with the recording industry as it shifted from physical to digital, was around when Pandora was building its first advertising product, worked on Amex Unstaged at Digitas, and produced sizzle reels and content for the New Fronts at Group Nine. He is also a lifelong live music fan and sometimes piano player, so his credentials come from the crowd, the stage and the back office.
Adam and Jordan discuss why the music we meet as teenagers keeps its hold on us, why Adam still trusts a record store shelf over an algorithm, what happens when he takes his earbuds out and just listens to the city, and how a gut reaction to a song finds its way into client work.
