Doug Porter is an Australian photographic artist whose creative journey spans more than six decades. After leaving Art College at 17, where he studied drawing, painting and printmaking, Doug began his career in a professional photographic laboratory in 1964. Over the following 51 years, he worked alongside and printed for some of Australia’s finest photographers, including Athol Shmith, Wolfgang Sievers, Robert Imhoff and Ian McKenzie, eventually spending 38 years as Commercial Production Manager at Bond Imaging.
The arrival of digital imaging transformed Doug’s creative world, sparking an enduring passion for Photoshop and the possibilities of digital post-production. After returning seriously to photography following a trip to Italy in 2006, he established Fresco Images – Doug Porter Imagery Australia.
Today, Doug is particularly drawn to creating narrative artworks from multiple photographs. He approaches each piece as a blank canvas, using only his own imagery and allowing the work to evolve organically without presets or AI-generated content. For Doug, the photograph is often simply the starting point—a sketch from which the final artwork emerges.
As he describes his process: “The computer is my easel, the folder of images my palette, and my tablet and pen my brushes.”
Doug’s work can be found in private homes and commercial spaces throughout Australia, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States.
