Are our critiques of social media smuggling in old humanist baggage, treating addiction as misplaced desire that needs a therapy of the soul? Emma leads a conversation with Columbia philosopher Amogh Sahu, with Sereptie in tow, that interrogates the popular diagnosis of online addiction and the pull of social media’s relational machinery. Drawing on Marx, Deleuze, and Baudrillard, we ask whether resistance is futile, and whether the Luddite and “return to nature” impulses offer a way out or just another image to be absorbed. And is brain rot’s warping of our collective sense of time a symptom of something much larger, and is what we perceive as pathology really the system working as intended?
