When was the last time you did nothing, and let your thoughts wander?

The ninety seconds waiting for the kettle. The lift. The queue at the supermarket. Those gaps used to be free, and something was happening in them.

This episode began as one thing and became another. I went looking for what unoccupied time actually does, expecting to find one answer, and found something more interesting.

The strongest evidence points toward walking rather than sitting still. A large review this year pulled together twenty-three studies and found that walking improves your ability to generate options, though not your ability to choose between them. Which turns out to be a genuinely useful distinction when you are stuck.

We also look at why boredom is a signal rather than a strategy, what actually produces a wandering mind, and why the real obstacle is that empty time has come to feel like waste.

There is a personal story in here too, about a piece of consulting advice that arrived as fear and became something more accurate once I stayed with it.

💡 Pause and reflect: When did you last let a thought finish?

If these conversations are adding something to your journey, reserve your seat in the sanctuary by following the show wherever you listen.
