A car rental bill claims thirty thousand kilometres in seven days. Before arguing about the charge, there’s a smaller problem: finding enough hours to do the driving. The maths is absurd. Getting the company to reconsider apparently takes more than pointing that out.

At the petrol pump, a different calculation applies. Saving a few cents hardly justifies an hour in line, until two Georgia stations start undercutting each other. How cheap does fuel have to get before even the sceptic joins the queue?

Then comes an election pitch that seems designed to lose: barely interested, supposedly unqualified, mainly trying to pay rent. It’s a remarkable way to ask for responsibility. Whether it’s terrible campaigning or unusually good marketing depends on what happens at the ballot box.
