Holiday shopping once meant a department store shift; now a seasonal opening might lead to a warehouse. Retail expert Bruce Winder weighs what Amazon’s hiring offers workers, alongside what gets lost when shopping becomes a delivery.

A paper slip, a counter, and a brown box hardly sound magical. Consumers Distributing made them feel that way to Bruce. Add a Woolworth’s café visit with his mother, and the question becomes more interesting than which retailer had the best prices: what made going there an experience?

There’s also a modest proposal for keeping that experience alive this season. Against shipping costs, imported-goods pressures, and delivery convenience, one extra stop could matter. Bruce identifies a younger generation whose shopping habits give the nostalgia conversation an unexpected future.
