Welcome back, truth-seekers, to 2 Minutes with the Lord and our Mission Series: Paul in 12 Cities. In this season, we are travelling with St. Paul through the great cities of his mission, discovering how the Gospel took root in each place. I am your host on the show, Fr. Veigas Dominic SVD, and I am happy to see you here. You have been our primary source of support on this journey.

Last time, we were in Thessalonica, where the Gospel met opposition and riots. Today, we journey to Berea, a city remembered not for hostility, but for open hearts and hungry minds. Here, the people received Paul’s message with eagerness and examined the Scriptures daily.

2. Paul’s Journey in Berea – History & Context

Berea, located about 50 miles southwest of Thessalonica, was a quieter city, less politically charged, and known for its educated population. Unlike Thessalonica, where Paul’s message caused uproar, Berea welcomed it with an attitude of openness.

Acts tells us that when Paul and Silas arrived, they went to the Jewish synagogue as usual. But here, something remarkable happened: the Bereans didn’t reject the message, nor did they accept it blindly. Instead, they combined eagerness with discernment — they listened carefully and then searched the Scriptures daily to see if what Paul said was true.

This made Berea a model community of faith — neither sceptical to the point of hardness nor gullible to the point of naivety. They were hungry for truth, and they knew where to find it: in the Word of God.

What is the key verse for us today?

“Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” – Acts 17:11
