In this episode of The Dugout, we sit down with Valeriah Big Eagle and Wizipan Little Elk Garriot, organizers with NDN Collective, to discuss the ongoing struggle to protect the Black Hills and the sacred lands of the Oceti Sakowin.
Valeriah and Wizipan share their personal journeys into organizing, the importance of kinship and Indigenous lifeways, and what it means to understand ourselves as relatives. They explain why the Black Hills are sacred and central to Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota history, culture, spirituality, and creation stories. After learning about the fight to protect Pe'sla we look toward the future: the campaign to return the Black Hills to the Oceti Sakowin, efforts toward a Black Hills mineral withdrawal, environmental restoration, and the importance of building relationships across Indigenous communities and movements.
