At a Chrism Mass, a bishop consecrates the Sacred Chrism used for Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders. He also blesses the Oil of Catechumens (for those preparing for Baptism) and the Oil of the Sick.

Ancient Christian writings suggest the consecration of sacramental oil has been a regular church practice since at least 200 AD.
