My Autistic Diary: Regulation & Relationships

Dela

Have you ever ruined a perfectly good day because it didn't go according to plan?

That's exactly what almost happened to Jeremy during his son's Special Olympics soccer camp. He arrived excited to support his son, but before long the schedule felt disorganized, communication was unclear, and the uncertainty began pressing on every part of him that craves structure and predictability. His familiar conflict cycle started to emerge: rising frustration, tightening expectations, and the quiet belief that someone else needed to fix the situation before he could enjoy it. In that moment, Jeremy had a choice. He could spend the day fighting reality, or he could regulate himself first.

In this episode, Jeremy shares how changing his expectations transformed the entire experience. Rather than trying to control the environment, he learned to manage his own nervous system, embrace flexibility, and become fully present with his son. The result wasn't a perfect day—it was a connected one. If you've ever found yourself frustrated because life, marriage, parenting, or even a family outing didn't unfold the way you expected, this conversation will help you recognize your own conflict cycle and discover how regulation can create connection, even when life refuses to follow the script.
