I thought this would be a quick snapshot, but it turns into something heavier and more honest. A new job has me traveling back to Alaska, the place I was born and raised, and it’s strange how time changes the story. When I left, I couldn’t wait to be gone. Now I’m back four or five times a year, and every trip makes me love the state more. Coming home doesn’t just bring scenery and nostalgia, though. It brings the parts of your life you tried to outgrow.

I end up in my hometown, where memory lane is basically unavoidable, and I stop at a park with a rock that holds my mom’s plaque. Her name, her dates, and a few words about her warmth and kindness pull me straight into grief. I also talk about something many of us, especially men, do without realizing it: avoiding pain by stuffing it down and driving right past the places that would make us stop and breathe.

My perspective is shaped by years in law enforcement, telling families their loved one is gone when they expected them home for dinner. That experience makes one message impossible to ignore: you’re not promised another tomorrow.
