Farwell, a former detective, is standing trial on federal charges in the death of Birchmore, whom he instructed when she was in a youth program at the Stoughton Police Department. Prosecutors called Heather Cheever, an officer who knew both, as their first witness, and several others testified on Tuesday, many touching on who Birchmore was.
