Recorded June 9, 2026 - in this episode, NDR's Chief Economist Alejandra Grindal discusses China's economy. Alejandra notes that China’s economy is best described as resilient at the headline level but increasingly imbalanced beneath the surface. There is persistent weakness in domestic demand, particularly in retail sales and the property market. However, China has so far shown resilience to the oil shock stemming from the war in Iran. The economy’s narrow leadership makes China more vulnerable to downside risks, particularly if external demand weakens due to the war in Iran. If growth comes under pressure, policymakers are likely to respond.
