We can understand our reading this week as a call to create a community committed to justice rather than an institution built on power and domination. In Matthew's Gospel, the ekklesia (translated church) is not primarily a building or hierarchy but an community of people collectively embodying love’s reign in the world. Love, justice, compassion, and mercy, not Caesar and Rome, are the hope for the future. Peter’s confession carried profound political implications, much more than theological ones, because it challenged the Empire’s claims to ultimate authority and gave the people a viable, subversive alternative.
