The walk-in pantry, the big island, the coffee bar. Eight dream home features I find full of clutter, and how to name the job you want each one to do.
The walk-in pantry, the big kitchen island and the coffee bar all look great in the listing photos. Six months after move-in, they're covered with stuff. In this episode I walk you through eight dream home features I see in real houses, what each one was built for, what ends up on it, and one fix for each that takes less than a weekend.
🍿 Why the walk-in pantry fills up with snacks, and the one-snack-per-person shopping rule
📦 Where to open packages so your kitchen island stays clear for cooking
🍷 What to keep on open shelves, and the wine glass rotation that cuts your dusting
☕ What belongs at your coffee bar, and where the protein powder goes
🍳 How to clear the prep counter in your butler's pantry or scullery
🧺 The one rule to keep an extra-large laundry room counter clear
🧰 How to zone your garage storage wall, with one section for the maybes
🛏️ How to keep the guest suite ready for guests between visits
❓ The one question I ask about every space: what job do I want it to do?
I mentioned this article in the episode: The Wall Street Journal, "Boomers Were Supposed to Downsize. They Are Buying Bigger Homes Instead." by Rachel Louise Ensign, July 17, 2026: https://www.wsj.com/economy/housing/baby-boomer-home-sales-real-estate-879614be
