Astronomers have discovered three supermassive black holes inside a single ancient galaxy, J0148-4214, seen as it existed more than 12.5 billion years ago. Two lie near the galactic center and may eventually merge, while a third sits farther out.
The discovery provides new clues about how galaxies and black holes grew rapidly in the early universe and could help scientists predict future gravitational-wave events.
