I forgot a client meeting.

Not once.

Twice.

The second time, I was standing in the middle of a grocery store on a Tuesday afternoon when my phone buzzed. My client had arrived at my house for our meeting, and I was fifteen minutes away with a cart full of groceries.

I was embarrassed. Angry with myself. Physically sick over it.

But what bothered me most was realizing this wasn’t actually a calendar problem.

I had built a business where I was the calendar. I was the follow-up system. I was the keeper of the client relationships, the details, the processes, and all the information everyone needed.

I wasn’t holding everything together nearly as well as I thought I was.

I was just dropping things quietly.

In this solo episode of The Accidental CEO Podcast, I’m sharing my delegation origin story—the story I recently told from the keynote stage at the Everyday Celebrity Conference—and the leadership lesson it took me way too long to learn.

We’re talking about why delegation feels so uncomfortable for high-performing founders, what happens when your standards become a bottleneck, and why simply handing someone a checklist is not actually delegation.

I also break down some of the stories founders tell themselves:

“They won’t care as much as I do.”

“It’s faster if I just do it myself.”

“I don’t have time to train someone.”

“I can’t afford to delegate.”

And maybe the biggest one of all:

“If I’m not needed, what does that say about me?”

The biggest shift wasn’t creating an SOP or hiring help.

It was learning how to let the system run without grabbing the work back the second I felt uncomfortable.

Because the goal isn’t to build a business that proves how much you can carry.

It’s to build one that works without requiring you to carry everything.

Listen in for a candid conversation about delegation, founder identity, client communication, leadership, letting go, and what it really means to move from being the person who built the business to the CEO capable of leading it.

If you’re ready to strengthen your delegation skills and create more ownership inside your team, check out the Speaker Playbook HERE.

And if this episode made you think of a founder who is still trying to be the entire system, send it their way.
