Simon de Montfort, a formidable figure in medieval England, was born into a noble French family around 1208. As Earl of Leicester, he found himself at the heart of a struggle over the monarchy's power. Initially allied with King Henry III through marriage to Henry's sister, Eleanor, Simon grew disillusioned with the king's rule, opposing his use of authority and favoritism.
By 1258, unrest among barons led to the Provisions of Oxford, curbing royal power. Simon emerged as a leader of the opposition, propelling England into civil war. His victory at the 1264 Battle of Lewes left King Henry and Prince Edward captive, making Simon the de facto ruler.
Simon’s 1265 Parliament, though not modern democracy, was pivotal in developing parliamentary governance. However, his reign was marked by violence and anti-Semitic measures. Despite initial success, his support waned, and he was killed at the 1265 Battle of Evesham. His rebellion reshaped the monarchy and left a lasting legacy.
