What happens when someone from Manchester, England, moves to St. Petersburg, Russia, and never leaves?

In this episode, I sit down with British author and blogger Craig Ashton, who first arrived in Russia as a university student in 2002. We talk about the differences between British politeness and Russian directness, rewriting the male to female dynamics, why British humour doesn't translate in Russia and what it’s like to build a life in a country where you’ll always be a bit of an outsider.

We also explore how language shapes the way we think and communicate, and why being more direct can sometimes make connecting with people easier.
