There are films that entertain us, films that challenge us, and then there are films that make us acutely aware of just how fragile life can be. A Matter of Minutes, directed by Hannah Beach and written by Phoebe Campbell-Harris, belongs firmly in the third category.
What begins as a familiar teenage night of music, flirtation and careless partying quickly transforms into a terrifying race against time. Ava’s encounter with Theo initially feels innocent, even romantic, until a seemingly insignificant moment becomes a matter of life and death.
What makes the film so effective is its refusal to sensationalize anaphylaxis. Instead, Beach places us inside Ava’s increasingly desperate perspective, turning the crowded party into something almost claustrophobic. The very people surrounding her become part of the danger—not necessarily because they are malicious, but because they are distracted, intoxicated and oblivious to what is happening.
That is where the film finds its greatest power. The horror isn't simply the allergic reaction; it is the realization that Ava may have to save herself while surrounded by people who don't understand the urgency of her situation.
Campbell-Harris's writing gives the story authenticity, while Beach's direction builds tension with remarkable control. A Matter of Minutes doesn't preach. It puts us in the moment—and makes every second count.
