Chapter 03 - Karma Yoga1. Arjuna’s Question (Slokas 1–2)Arjuna is confused: if Jñāna Yoga gives Moksha, why is Krishna advising Karma Yoga?He asks why Krishna glorifies Jñāna Yoga but instructs him to act.2. Bhagavan’s Fundamental Clarification (Slokas 3–7)Two lifestyles (niṣṭhā): Pravṛtti Mārga (Grihastha) & Nivṛtti Mārga (Sannyāsa)Two sādhanas: Karma Yoga and Jñāna YogaMoksha depends on the sādhanas, not the lifestyle. No choice in the need for sādhanas; Karma Yoga must precede Jñāna Yoga.Without purifying the mind through Karma Yoga, Jñāna Yoga is not effective.Action is unavoidable due to one’s inherent guṇas.Premature renunciation leads to hypocrisy (mithyācāra).3. Karma Yoga Explained (Slokas 8–16)Niyatam Karma: Perform prescribed duties; avoid attachment.Perform actions with Ishvara Arpana Bhāva (offering attitude).Accept results with Prasāda Bhāva.Emphasized the Pañcha Mahā Yajñas (Deva, Pitr, Brahma, Manushya, Bhūta).Dharmo Rakṣati Rakṣitaḥ: Protect Dharma, and it protects you.Karma Yoga sustains the Jagat Chakra (cycle of nature and society).4. Moksha Defined (Slokas 17–18)Characteristics of a Jñāni / Mukta:Ātma Ratiḥ: No Complaints about self.Ātma Tṛptiḥ: No Complaints in things handled.Ātma Santushtah: Being Fulfilled.Na Kṛtena Arthaḥ: Not bound by actions or inaction.5. Karma Yoga Reinforced (Sloka 19)Asaktaḥ (non-attachment) and Satatam (constant effort) are vital.6. Loka Saṅgraha – Social Responsibility (Slokas 20–29)Perform duties for societal good, even if one is a Jñāni (Janaka as example).Śiṣṭācāraḥ: Role models shape society’s conduct.Advice to Jñānis:Don’t discourage karmis by criticizing action.Let karmis evolve through their experiences.Karma Perception Difference:Ajnāni sees “I am the doer” (Ahankāra).Jñāni sees Guṇas acting among Guṇas – remains detached.7. Essence of Karma Yoga (Sloka 30)the five attitudes:Adhyātma Chetasā – with spiritual insight.Mayi sarvāṇi karmāṇi sannyasya - Ishvara Arpana - Offering to GodNirāśīḥ - no expectationNirmama - no possessivenessVigata-jvaraḥ – mental calm8. Praise and Warning (Slokas 31–32)Praise: Those who follow Karma Yoga with Shraddha are freed from Karma.Warning: Those who criticize and ignore the teaching are spiritually lost.9. Free Will vs. Nature (Slokas 33–34)Actions stem from one’s prakṛti (nature), even for a Jñāni.Raaga-Dveṣa are enemies; one must not be controlled by likes and dislikes.Self-mastery and viveka are essential for growth on this path.10. Warning Against Confusion (Slokas 35–36)Better to fail in one's own dharma than succeed in another’s.Doing another's duty out of fear or attraction leads to danger.Arjuna asks: What impels us to sin even when unwilling?11. Bhagavan’s Answer: Kāma (Slokas 37–41)It is kāma (desire), which turns into krodha (anger) when obstructed.Kāma is born of rajo guṇa – all-consuming and dangerous. It covers knowledge like smoke covers fire or dirt covers mirror.Kāma resides in: Senses, Mind, IntellectThese are the seats of desire, which delude the jīva.12. Fight Desire through Self-Knowledge (Slokas 42–43)Hierarchy of control: Senses - Mind - Intellect - Self (Ātman)Knowing the Self as higher, control desire using viveka (discrimination).Start from karma yoga, purify mind, proceed to jñāna yoga.Ultimately, realize your Self and attain freedom from desire.
