After reading about the Japanese phenomenon of johatsu—people who quietly disappear and begin new lives—a man becomes haunted by the idea of starting over. As he reflects on the many versions of himself he has already left behind, he begins to wonder whether freedom comes from escaping a life, or learning how to remain within it.
