Duncan Hsu never grew up seeing spirits and never imagined becoming a medium. He had a regular career, wasn't particularly spiritual, and approached mediumship with plenty of skepticism. Then, in 2020, the sudden death of his partner Thomas changed everything.

After a reading that Duncan describes as life-changing, he began wondering whether communicating with those who have died was something he might actually learn to do himself. What followed was years of practice, doubt, mistakes, development—and eventually, becoming an evidential medium himself.

In this unusually candid conversation, Duncan and Stephen talk about what it actually takes to develop mediumship, whether everyone has the ability, why overthinking can get in the way, what happens when your abilities seem to disappear, and why becoming a better medium may be inseparable from becoming a better version of yourself.

Duncan's approach is refreshingly unassuming. He isn't interested in fame or making grand claims. As he puts it, he simply wants to “do good work”—using evidence, compassion and trust to help people experience the possibility that those they love may still be very much with them. His bio similarly emphasizes compassion, trust and empathy as central to his work.
