Dan Ruff has spent nearly two decades moving through hospitality, from investment banking and real estate into the CEO seat at Belmond, the luxury hotel, train, and river cruise group known for iconic properties including the Hotel Cipriani, Copacabana Palace, Hotel Splendido, and the Venice Simplon Orient Express. Dan joined Belmond just before LVMH completed its acquisition of the hospitality company in 2019, and since then has led the transition into Belmond’s next chapter. In this conversation, Dan lays out the thesis behind Belmond's slow luxury positioning: that in an industry racing to add more experiences, more technology, and more touchpoints, the scarcest resource for a global traveler is time, and Belmond's entire operating model is built to protect it rather than fill it.
Dan walks through how that thesis shows up across very different parts of the business. On Belmond's train division, he walks through how Belmond acquires, restores, and operates historic carriages. On the hotel side, he talks about what it means to pursue a legacy vision for centuries-old properties while backed by LVMH, the largest luxury conglomerate in the world, and what that ownership structure allows Belmond to take on that it otherwise could not. He also gets into how Belmond thinks about building out what he calls journeys in markets like Peru and Italy, where multiple properties work together to create a longer guest experience rather than standing alone.
