With Zach Cregger's Resident Evil coming out this month we are back covering his debut, Barbarian, which was one of our earliest episodes.
When Tess arrives at her rental house late at night, she discovers that a strange man named Keith is already staying there. Despite the obvious red flags—and several reasons to simply get in the car and leave—Tess decides to stay. Big mistake. What begins as an awkward encounter between two strangers quickly turns into something far more disturbing, as the house reveals secrets that neither of them could have imagined.
We’re talking about Barbarian’s genuinely effective scares, its unpredictable structure, memorable performances, dark humor, and the way Cregger keeps pulling the rug out from underneath the audience. We’ll also get into whether all those twists ultimately come together or if the movie’s second half loses some of the tension that makes its opening so damn effective.
So lock the doors, check the basement, and whatever you do, don’t book the Airbnb.
