Mindset only becomes useful when an athlete knows what to do with it in the moment.
In Part Two, sport psychologist Dan Abrahams, whose work has included Premier League clubs and Formula One, returns to the ideas behind his new book, Compete. He explains how athletes can build a “game face” that helps them compete under pressure. Dan also introduces ANTs, his term for the automatic negative thoughts that can quietly take over during competition.
The ideas are simple enough for an eight-year-old to understand, yet still relevant at the highest levels of sport. Practised consistently, they can help athletes recover faster from mistakes and stay closer to their best when the pressure rises.
This is a conversation you’ll want to put into practice.
