Mara has raised a $7 million pre-seed round led by Khosla Ventures, with participation from a16z Speedrun, Night Capital, Palmdrive, Protagonist, Freedom Fund and Indicator Fund alongside angel investors. The San Francisco company builds Spike, an integrated counter-UAS platform aimed at the small FPV drones that cost a few hundred dollars each, against published interceptor costs that run from roughly $125,000 for a Coyote 2C up to $5.3 million for a Patriot PAC-3 MSE. Spike pairs a persistent targeting sensor called Spotter with a small tube-launched interceptor called Seeker, giving one position 360-degree coverage against multiple simultaneous threats at a system cost designed to fall below the value of the asset being protected, with a human remaining on the loop to set rules of engagement. Mara was incorporated in August 2024 by Daniel Kofman and Sriram Raghu, has run field exercises with US Army units and a US special operations unit, saw Ukrainian forces operate Spotter 40km from the front line in July 2026, and targets ground-mounted deployment to customers by the end of 2026 with vehicle-mounted and man-portable configurations in 2027.

What is Spike? An integrated counter-UAS platform made of two modular parts that work alone or together. Spotter is a persistent detection and tracking sensor combining visual, acoustic and optional radar sensing. Seeker is a small tube-launched interceptor with onboard intelligence.
Why do small FPV drones need a different counter-drone approach? Most counter-UAS systems were built for larger drones flying high on predictable paths and concentrate cost and line of fire in a single node, which degrades when several small aircraft approach from different directions at once.
What is the cost-exchange problem? Published interceptor costs run from roughly $125,000 for a Coyote 2C up to $5.3 million for a Patriot PAC-3 MSE and $12m to $15m for THAAD, against threat drones costing a few hundred dollars. The US Army launched a low-cost interceptor programme in June 2026 with a price ceiling of $1 million to address it.
