On August 31, 2026 the European Commission designated ChatGPT a Very Large Online Search Engine under the Digital Services Act, the first time an AI chatbot has ever been placed in the bloc's strictest regulatory tier. Chris and Laura unpack why a system that answers questions got filed under search rather than platform, what 159.1 million monthly European users triggered, and what annual systemic risk assessments, independent audits, vetted researcher access and a 6 percent global turnover penalty actually mean in practice. Reddit and Roblox were designated alongside it, bringing the tier to 28 services and setting a precedent every other major AI assistant is now walking toward.
