Season 7-Episode 193: Interview with Deer Fellow

 Deer Fellow, made up of husband and wife duo, Alyssa Kelly and Matt Salois were such a pleasure to talk to. We discussed their recent release “Hues,” how the album came to be, and how they started out as a duo and continue to explore and create! This band really is “everything in one!”   

Since meeting at an Austin open mic 11 years ago, Matt Salois and Alyssa Kelly have grown together as both artists and partners. Recently married, the pair continue to build their musical career while deepening the chemistry that defines Deer Fellow’s sound. The duo has earned recognition as a Sonic Guild grantee and official SXSW artist, with additional honors including selection in the ATX Short Film Showcase, coverage from Earmilk and KUTX, and inclusion in Austin 360’s Top EPs of 2021.   

Austin indie folk-pop duo Deer Fellow released its debut full-length album, Hues, on May 29, 2026. Richly layered and emotionally resonant, the collection showcases the duo’s signatureblend of electric guitar, bell-clear violin and luminous vocal harmonies. Singles “Fool For You,” “Invisible” and “Pep In My Step” highlight the album’s artistic depth, lush arrangements and lyrical intimacy. 

Produced by Deer Fellow and mixed and mastered by Erik Wofford, Hues builds on the intricate soundscapes and heartfelt songwriting that earned the band praise from EASTside Magazine as“pioneers of innovative sound.” Combining dynamic instrumentation with distinctive vocal melodies, Deer Fellow’s first LP explores how our emotional “colors” shape the way we move through the world. Every feeling light or dark plays a role, and life is richest when we embrace the full spectrum. The title track, “Hues,” was inspired by the shifting color mechanics of the video game Hue.
