October 18 annually celebrates the feast day of Saint Luke the Apostle and Evangelist in the Western (Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Protestant) traditions. He was a first-century physician from Antioch, a companion of St. Paul on his missionary journeys, and a Gentile convert to Christianity. He is the patron saint of physicians, surgeons, artists, bachelors, and butchers. He is typically represented by a winged ox or calf. Tradition credits him with painting some of the earliest icons of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. In many regions, the warm, sunny days around mid-October are historically referred to as "St. Luke's Little Summer". The third of the New Testament's four canonical Gospels is Luke. It tells of the origins, birth, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus. The author is anonymous but the traditional view that Luke the Evangelist was the companion of Paul is still put forward. The most probable date for its composition is around AD 80–110, and there is evidence that it was still being revised well into the 2nd century. Ee171
