In this episode of Agents of Everything, I’m joined by entrepreneur, coach, and ‘Guru Maker’ James Lavers for a conversation that begins with business... before progressively becoming something so much bigger!
I’ve known James for almost two decades now. We first met in person at a point where I was desperately trying to keep my fledgeling business from falling apart, and over ensuing years we’ve had countless conversations about psychology, solo entrepreneurship, learning, and what actually enables people to create meaningful change in their lives.
This conversation brings a lot of those threads together.
☀️ could YOU become a ‘guru’? 👉🏻 go here! 🔗
We start out at the surface level, talking about building a business—marketing, selling, charging appropriately for your work, and navigating the inevitable uncertainty that comes with trying to create something of your own.
But soon start to get underneath underneath all of that; exploring a much more fundamental question:
What allows people to keep moving towards a worthwhile future—even when they don’t feel confident, certain, or full of ‘self-belief’?
This is one of the great things about James—he’s always ready to challenge the assumptions that have become the orthodoxy of the personal development world.
Do you really need self-belief before you can succeed?
Is talent actually the deciding factor?
And, what if the secret isn’t believing in yourself at all, but simply refusing to take your self-doubt too seriously?
Along the way we explore ideas like continual problem-solving, perseverance, motivation, personality, and what the importance of “the arc of becoming”—that sense that our lives are moving towards something meaningful, and what happens when we lose sight of it.
There are some wonderful metaphors scattered throughout the conversation too: Gong Fu as the patient accumulation of skill through effort over time; the necessity of “being like a shark” and continuing to move; and a what hot-air ballooning might teach us about success.
We also have a rich discussion about value, selling, and why so many thoughtful practitioners struggle to ask for money—not because they lack ability, but because of the stories they’ve unknowingly absorbed about what it means to offer something of genuine worth.
Whether you’re building a business, pursuing a creative ambition, working with clients, or simply trying to keep moving towards a future that feels meaningful, I think you’ll find plenty here to think about.
Above all, this is a conversation about possibility.
About how extraordinary lives are often built not through certainty, but through curiosity... not through unwavering belief, but through continuing to move, continuing to learn, and refusing to let go of the future that keeps quietly calling you forward.
