Court observers expected surviving roommate Dylan Mortensen to become one of the most important witnesses in Bryan Kohberger’s eventual trial because she was the only known eyewitness who said she saw the masked intruder inside the King Road house on the night Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin were murdered. Mortensen told investigators she had opened her bedroom door after hearing noises, saw a man dressed in black with a mask covering part of his face and noticed what she described as “bushy eyebrows” before he walked toward the sliding glass door. Court TV executive producer Ted Rowlands said the defense would likely “jump on” Mortensen when she testified because her account gave prosecutors valuable eyewitness evidence but also exposed areas ripe for cross-examination. Chief among them was the long delay before anyone called 911, despite Mortensen saying she had been frightened enough by what she saw to lock herself inside her room.
The defense was therefore expected to scrutinize Mortensen’s memory, perception and actions during and after the killings, particularly the apparent disconnect between describing herself as being in a “frozen shock phase” and the fact that police were not summoned until nearly noon. Rowlands believed that issue could become pivotal because jurors would likely want to understand what Mortensen heard, what she believed was happening and why no emergency call was made for hours. Her testimony also carried enormous emotional and evidentiary weight because prosecutors could use her description of the intruder to reinforce other evidence against Kohberger, while the defense could try to create reasonable doubt by challenging the reliability of what she remembered under traumatic circumstances. The article ultimately framed Mortensen as a witness both sides would have needed badly: prosecutors because she put a masked man inside the house, and the defense because the unanswered questions surrounding that night gave them one of their clearest opportunities to attack the state’s narrative.
