Day twenty-one of Chad Daybell’s trial focused heavily on Tammy Daybell’s health, Chad’s behavior after her death and testimony from Tammy’s sister Samantha Gwilliam and her husband Jason. Former deputy coroner Cammy Willmore testified that when she responded to the Daybell home after Tammy died, she noticed unusual pink foam coming from Tammy’s mouth that returned after being wiped away, prompting her to search whether poisoning could cause that reaction. Samantha testified that Tammy had appeared healthy and happy just two weeks before her death and said she was shocked when she learned Tammy had died. She also found it suspicious that Chad did not want his name included on Tammy’s headstone and testified that when she confronted him about marrying Lori only weeks after Tammy’s burial, Chad claimed Tammy had appeared to him at the cemetery and told him to move on. Jason Gwilliam described Chad’s growing obsession with end-times prophecies, earthquakes and spiritual visions and said Chad had increasingly used those beliefs to exert influence over people around him. He also testified that Chad wanted Tammy’s funeral held only days after her death and appeared strangely composed, saying he seemed to be “trying to cry” rather than genuinely mourning.

The afternoon shifted toward the prosecution’s attempt to show that Chad and Lori had been planning a future together long before Tammy died. FBI tactical specialist Nicole Heideman testified that Chad had searched for malachite as early as March 2019 and that both Chad and Lori were researching the stone while Charles Vallow and Tammy were still alive. Lori later attempted to purchase malachite wedding rings in August and October, and investigators found records showing Chad and Lori discussing Hawaii and “the plan” months before they eventually married there on November 5, 2019. Heideman also walked jurors through temple attendance records showing Chad and Lori visiting temples together before Charles’ death and read portions of Chad’s “James and Elena” story, a thinly disguised account of his relationship with Lori in which the two characters were portrayed as eternal companions reunited across previous lives. The story closely mirrored real events, including their first meeting, temple visits and belief that they had a special divine mission together, giving prosecutors another way to argue that the affair and future marriage were not spontaneous developments after Tammy’s death but part of a relationship Chad had been cultivating for many months.
