Day sixteen of Chad Daybell’s trial focused on the search for JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan and the physical evidence recovered from Chad’s property. Retired Rexburg Police Detective David Stubbs continued describing the November 2019 welfare check for JJ and the searches that followed after Lori Vallow falsely claimed JJ was staying with Melanie Gibb. Stubbs testified that investigators quickly realized Lori’s story did not hold up, that JJ was not enrolled where she claimed and that Tylee was not attending BYU-Idaho as Lori had suggested. When officers returned with search warrants, they found signs that Lori had left the apartment quickly, including an essentially empty master-bedroom closet. Stubbs also testified about internet searches that became important to investigators, including searches connected to wedding rings, possession and Chad’s search for wind direction on September 8, 2019, shortly before prosecutors believed Tylee was burned and buried on his property. Jurors were also shown photographs from Chad and Lori’s November 2019 Hawaii wedding, placing their new life together against the timeline in which JJ and Tylee were already dead and being publicly treated as missing children.

FBI Special Agent Steve Daniels then took jurors directly into the June 9, 2020 excavation of Chad’s Salem property. Daniels described how investigators used cellphone-location data, Chad’s text messages about a pet cemetery and knowledge of a fire pit to identify areas that needed to be searched. He testified that investigators recovered pieces of bone, burned flesh, fabric, a chain and a silver charm believed to have belonged to Tylee from the fire-pit area, and jurors were shown the charm alongside a photograph of Tylee wearing a similar necklace. Daniels described the painstaking excavation of Tylee’s badly burned and dismembered remains and explained that investigators later seized a dirty shovel and pickaxe from the property because they could have been used in the burial or destruction of evidence. Day sixteen gave jurors some of the most tangible evidence of the trial, moving beyond messages and testimony and placing physical objects from Chad’s own property directly in front of them as prosecutors continued tying him to the locations where JJ and Tylee were found.
