Supergirl, the DCU’s second film, hit theaters last weekend and its likelihood to turn a profit is already an uphill battle. The film, which stars Milly Alcock in the title role, and was directed by Craig Gillespie, of I, Tonya fame, raked in a cumulative $68 million at the worldwide box office. With a reported budget of $170–186 million, the film needs to earn upward of $300 million just to break even. Compounding those figures, the movie currently holds a 54% average on Rotten Tomatoes and a B- Cinemascore with audiences.
The 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival took place last week and with it came announcements for a bevy of animated films and series. DC and Warner Bros Animation particularly stood out for a number of upcoming Batman projects. The first is a series adaptation of Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s best-selling comic series, Absolute Batman, which Warner Bros Animation is partnering with DC Studios to develop. Joker: Laughing Riot was also announced as an adult anime series that explores the Joker in a world where Batman has been killed and will be directed by LOTR: War of the Rohirrim animator Yasuhuro Aoki. If that wasn’t enough animated Batmen for you, a trailer for the movie Batman: Knightfall Part One has been released and attendees of the festival were able to see and review the film ahead of its currently undated release later this year. Finally, a kid-friendly series focusing on Krypto was also confirmed to be in the works.
