On today's show I sat down with Kevin Murphy, executive vice president and CEO of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, about his non-traditional rise from actuary to leading a 1,600-person organization serving all 92 Indiana counties.
Murphy shares his educational journey from Franklin College to earning math master's at Miami of Ohio, the rigorous actuarial exam process while he was working, and how a Safeco consolidation led him to join Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance in 2000.
He explains the company's origins in 1934 to address affordable farm insurance, how it also serves non-farm customers, and its structure under Indiana Farm Bureau with related legal entities.
Murphy shares his take on agent models, why insurance sales is really about education and advocacy, and stepping in as interim CEO in April 2020. He also talks about following a predecessor, hitting the road to listen across Indiana, and using AI to gain efficiency without losing the local, human touch.
