Cutdown week got loud in Charlotte. On Tuesday, September 1, the Carolina Panthers put four voices at the podium — GM Dan Morgan, head coach Dave Canales, new linebacker Bobby Okereke, and tight end Tommy Tremble — and between them they explained a 72-hour stretch that reshaped two position groups and sent a 2024 third-round pick to the New York Jets. We start with the Trevin Wallace decision. Canales called the Wallace–Claudin Cherelus competition "neck and neck" and said Cherelus "had an edge" on special teams. Morgan, who watched tape with Wallace in his office "multiple times," said the call was difficult but pointed to the Okereke signing, Tyrel Dodson on the practice squad, and rookie Jackson Kuwatch as the reasons he feels good about the room. Then, unprompted, Morgan went further: "You're not going to hit every pick... that's on me to go back and look at our processes." Bobby Okereke's first day in the building was a masterclass in saying the right things. The eight-year vet explained why he waited until September to sign, how Pete Hansen and the Stanford connection sealed it, and why he's already told Devin Lloyd "it's his show" — no green dot expectations. He also revealed he talked to Thomas Davis about wearing No. 58 and is "working something out" on the price.
Then there's the tight end room. Morgan and Canales both defended keeping five, but Morgan added "not to say that something couldn't change," and Canales admitted they still need to see how Darren Waller "handles a full volume of a week." Waller worked with a trainer on the side Tuesday. Tommy Tremble, meanwhile, is out here lobbying for "05 personnel" and calling Felipe Franks "a dog."
Haynes King is on the 53, and Canales answered the package question with two words: "Anything's possible." He called King "a true 4.47 guy" and "a 25-year-old grown man," and Morgan said flatly they won't expose him to waivers. We read between the lines.
