Chilean cultural icon Victor Jara was arrested by the Chilean military shortly after Augusto Pinochet's 11 September 1973 coup, overthrowing President Salvador Allende. Jara was tortured, and shot, his body discarded in the street. In life, Jara was a potent cultural figure; in death he would become a touchstone for the enduring struggle for human rights and justice across Latin America.
