What if the goal of our lives isn’t to produce more, but to become more deeply rooted? In this conversation, Jeff and Terra Mattson sit down with Rhonda Began and Bette Dickinson to explore what the vineyard can teach us about spiritual formation, leadership, and the seasons of our lives. Through Bette’s years of learning from a master vine dresser, we’re reminded that God isn’t a taskmaster demanding more fruit. He is a loving Vine Maker who tends to us with patience, compassion, and care.

We talk about why pruning isn’t punishment, but an invitation to let go of what no longer serves us so we can give our energy to what God is actually growing. We explore the importance of honoring seasons of rest, recognizing our limits, resisting the pressure to chase every opportunity, and trusting that hidden seasons can be doing some of the deepest work in us.

For anyone feeling stretched thin, stuck in a season of waiting, or tempted to measure their worth by what they produce, this conversation offers a different way forward. We don’t have to force growth. We can abide, pay attention, and trust the Vine Maker to cultivate a life that bears not just more fruit, but good and lasting fruit.

  • God is cultivating us, not squeezing us for more fruit. His work in our lives is motivated by love and a desire for our health and flourishing.
  • Pruning is not punishment. God removes what is no longer serving us so we can invest our limited energy in what He is actually calling us toward.
  • Healthy roots matter more than immediate results. Especially for emerging leaders, seasons of growth, experimentation, and failure can be more important than producing visible fruit.
  • Every season has a purpose. Dormancy, pruning, growth, and harvest are all necessary parts of a healthy life with God.
  • We need to recognize our limits. Flourishing requires resisting the temptation to pursue every opportunity and trusting that we don't have to do everything.
  • Quality matters more than quantity. A flourishing life is not measured by constant upward growth, productivity, or visible success, but by the quality of our relationships, character, and fruit.
  • Rest is essential to sustainable leadership. Sabbath and sabbatical aren't interruptions to our calling. They help create the conditions for long-term health and fruitfulness.
