On December 8, 2004, “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott — the virtuoso guitarist whose explosive playing, singular tone, and larger-than-life personality helped transform Pantera from a Texas metal band into one of the most influential and beloved heavy acts of the 90s — was shot and killed onstage at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio at the age of 38. Abbott had spent more than two decades alongside his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul, building a devoted following through Pantera’s groundbreaking albums Cowboys from Hell, Vulgar Display of Power, and Far Beyond Driven, before launching his new band Damageplan after Pantera’s bitter breakup. His murder, carried out in front of horrified fans only moments after Damageplan began performing, became one of the most shocking acts of violence in rock history.
