Endometriosis, Lupus and Fighting to Be Heard — Dr Liz Murray on a Mission to Change Women's Health

Dela

For generations, women have been told that painful, heavy periods are just part of life. That they are normal. That they should get on with it.

Dr Liz Murray is on a mission to change that.

A former NHS doctor, women's health activist, founder of the charity Mortal and Strong, and author of Not Just Painful Periods. In this conversation, Liz brings something rare in that she is both the doctor and the patient. Diagnosed with endometriosis, lupus, and connective tissue disease after years of dismissal, multiple miscarriages, wrongly advised IVF, and ultimately a hysterectomy in her early thirties, Liz knows this system from both sides of the consultation room.

And she is determined to make sure no other woman goes through what she went through.

In this episode, we have an important, honest, and eye-opening conversation about women's health that will leave you fully armed to advocate for yourself next time something just doesn’t feel right.

In this episode:

  • What endometriosis actually is and why it takes an average of nine years to diagnose
  • Liz's own journey from medical student in a wheelchair to a hysterectomy at 32
  • The multiple miscarriages, wrong advice, and £12,000 of IVF that should never have happened
  • The miracle pregnancy after clearance surgery and her rainbow baby
  • Why painful periods are not normal and what to do about it
  • Some truths about the contraceptive pill
  • The emerging link between neurodiversity, hypermobility, and endometriosis
  • How to advocate for yourself in a healthcare system that doesn't always listen
  • The Japanese art of kintsugi and why Liz built a charity around it
