Clay Aiken on New Music, Fatherhood, and Not Caring Anymore

Dela

Clay Aiken spent eighteen years raising his son instead of chasing another album, and he'll tell you that wasn't a mistake. Now that his son Parker is nearly off to college, the American Idol season two runner-up is back with his first new single since 2007, Rewind, and a lot less patience for pretending.

On this episode of The Gist, Chris Vetrano sits down with Clay Aiken to talk about what actually pulled him back into music, from a surprise reunion tour with Ruben Studdard to the phone call he made the moment he first heard Rewind. They get into how American Idol has changed since the show's early, unscripted seasons, why today's contestants show up with managers and pre-built personas, and what it means to finally stop worrying about how he looks or sounds. Clay also opens up about being one of the last public figures forced to come out on a magazine cover, and why he thinks that culture has changed for the better.
