The Himalayas are one of the world’s greatest biodiversity treasures, yet they are also among the most vulnerable mountain systems on Earth. Stretching across multiple countries and supporting millions of people, this extraordinary landscape is home to remarkable wildlife, diverse ecosystems, unique cultures, and some of Asia’s most important freshwater sources. But rapid climate change, ecosystem degradation, habitat fragmentation, unsustainable development, and increasing human pressures are transforming the region at an unprecedented pace.

In this episode of the Think Wildlife Podcast, we are joined by Dr. Nakul Chettri, Senior Fellow and Associate Director of ATREE’s Himalayan Initiative, to explore the future of Himalayan biodiversity conservation and why protecting these mountains is essential not only for wildlife, but also for people across South Asia.

Growing up in the shadow of Kanchenjunga, Dr. Chettri shares how his childhood experiences inspired a lifelong journey into conservation science. He explains why the Eastern Himalayas are globally recognised as a biodiversity hotspot, where steep elevation gradients, tropical forests, alpine meadows, glaciers, and unique microclimates create exceptional levels of biodiversity and endemism. Alongside this ecological richness lies an equally remarkable cultural landscape shaped by indigenous communities whose knowledge and stewardship have protected these ecosystems for generations.

The conversation explores how ATREE’s Himalayan Initiative works at the intersection of science, policy, and local communities to address the complex relationship between conservation and sustainable development. Dr. Chettri highlights why community-based conservation remains one of the most effective approaches for protecting biodiversity while supporting livelihoods, and why indigenous knowledge is essential for long-term resilience.

Climate change is one of the central themes of this discussion. Often called The Third Pole, the Himalayas contain the largest concentration of ice outside the Arctic and Antarctic. As glaciers retreat, rainfall patterns shift, and extreme weather events become more frequent, the consequences extend far beyond mountain communities, affecting water security, agriculture, biodiversity, and disaster risk throughout Asia. Dr. Chettri discusses these emerging challenges and explains why climate adaptation and ecosystem restoration must become central priorities for governments and conservation organisations alike.

Dr. Chettri also reflects on his contributions to the IPBES Global Assessment, sharing insights into how global biodiversity science can influence national conservation policy and international decision-making.
