Have you ever been called “nice” and wondered why it didn’t quite feel like a compliment?
In this episode of Empowering Her, I’m sharing a personal realization that started with a friend who kept calling me nice. Every time she said it, something inside me cringed. And I couldn’t quite figure out why.
Until I started exploring the difference between being nice and being kind.
Somewhere along the way, so many of us learned that being a “nice girl” meant being agreeable, keeping the peace, avoiding conflict, and making everyone else comfortable. But what happens when being nice comes at the expense of our own needs, boundaries, and authenticity?
We’re unpacking the difference between people-pleasing and genuine kindness, why so many women struggle with saying no, and how we can raise girls who are compassionate without teaching them to shrink themselves.
Because being kind doesn’t mean being passive. You can have a soft heart, a strong backbone, and a powerful voice.
In this episode, we explore:
- The difference between being nice and being genuinely kind
- Why the “nice girl” mentality can lead to people-pleasing and self-abandonment
- How the messages we receive as young girls shape our confidence and boundaries as adult women
- Why kindness and honesty can coexist, even when the truth is uncomfortable
- How to set healthy boundaries without feeling guilty or selfish
- Why being liked isn’t the same as being respected
- How to teach girls to be compassionate, confident, and unapologetically themselves
Your empowerment challenge:
For the next seven days, notice the moments when you’re being nice out of obligation, fear, or a desire for approval rather than genuine kindness.
Ask yourself: Am I doing this from my heart, or am I afraid of what might happen if I don’t?
Then choose one opportunity to practice courageous kindness. Speak your truth, honor a boundary, say no without overexplaining, or simply extend some of that compassion toward yourself.
Remember, you don’t have to choose between having a soft heart and a strong backbone. You were always allowed to have both.
