There was one thing David Anthony Burke wanted to know about Celeste Rivas Hernandez's pregnancy, and a detective read his exact words to a Los Angeles courtroom. Celeste Rivas Hernandez was eleven when the messages with David Anthony Burke began in August 2022. By January 2024, the texts indicate she was pregnant, days from a procedure, telling an adult that neither of them could care for a baby. His reply carried a laugh. His follow-up asked when she would get it done. And his last question in the exchange, the one he said his mother told him to ask, got an answer with his own name in it. Detective Corey Farell, the prosecution's final witness, put all of it on the record, along with nearly fifty images from Burke's devices that investigators labeled illegal material involving a minor, described to the court but never displayed. Earlier in the session, Dr. Grant Ho testified that Celeste died from two sharp-force wounds, and that the condition of her remains left questions no examination can settle. Her parents stepped out for the autopsy testimony. They came back for the texts. Her mother cried, and her father looked down. Prosecutors say the fingers missing from Celeste's hand carried a tattoo of Burke's name in red ink, and they wrote in a brief that they believe that is why the fingers were gone.
